Richmond District

Richmond District

Along with Sunset, Richmond is almost a San Francisco suburb. Located in the uppermost northwest corner of the peninsula, Richmond’s main avenue is Geary, which runs east and west through the neighborhood on its way toward downtown San Francisco. The last haven for Irish-Americans is in the Richmond community, also the location of many Irish pubs.

Like Sunset , the Richmond is divided into inner and outer areas. Park Presidio Boulevard cuts the district in two. The Inner Richmond is on the east and the Outer Richmond is the western portion. Both Sunset and Richmond comprise San Francisco’s biggest and most populated neighborhoods.

The name “Richmond” came from a Japanese art dealer from Richmond, Australia, who named his house after his home town. The area, like so many others, was built on top of sand dunes. After the great 1906 earthquake, the sand was leveled and covered to make a cable car hub.
