Monaco Hotel

Monaco Hotel

Among the Kimpton boutique hotels, the Monaco is a standout. The lobby has real wow factor with its grand marble staircase, high ceilings, warm sitting areas that encourage reading or people-watching under whimsical trompe l’oeil murals. The Monaco’s playful attitude tempers what could be a heavy Old World ambiance. Even though the rooms (renovated in 2006) are on the small side, the service, cleanliness and amenities almost make up for it. Canopied beds with patterned Frette linens and down pillows sit against striped walls. Whirlpool tubs are standard in most rooms. Wi-is free throughout the hotel and like most Kimpton hotels, pets are very welcome. (If you come without a pet, they will give you a companion goldfish to keep during your stay. ) Cookies and hot chocolate are served in the lobby every afternoon. Wine and cheese hour comes with complimentary ten minute massages by the spa staff from 5-6 p.m. They will even give out cards for free glasses of wine from the bar at the Grand Café to those who come late to happy hour. (As a general rule in most city hotels, be sure to ask for a room higher up or facing inside to get relief from the street noise.)

One special guestroom features an interactive music experience. The Grace Slick Shrine Suite features memorabilia and original artwork by the female lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship. Rates start at $329.

The Grand Café serves regional French cuisine with a contemporary California twist in a majestic setting. The elegant restaurant, with its 30 foot ceilings, is a restored turn-of-the-century ballroom decorated with Parisian art deco/art nouveau touches. The food is excellent, freshly prepared with care and imagination. If it’s your birthday, they will bring you a dark chocolate cake with a lit sparkler stuck in the middle. Reservations are highly recommended @ 415/292-0101 or at the restaurant website:é-reservations

Rates start at $259/night. Valet parking is $49/day, $64 for oversized vehicles and discounted 25% for hybrid cars.
